Connecting Art, the City and its people
The Karachi Biennale will take place in October 2017 and the launch on January Saturday 28, 2017 at Frere Hall from 5-7 pm is a curtain raiser to introduce the theme, objectives and program of the Biennale.
The Biennale is a format of art exhibitions that caters to a wider public audience and is held in over 100 cities around the world. Karachi will get its first Biennale in 2017 which is being organized by the Karachi Biennale Trust, a group of artistes, art critics, educators, curators and art enthusiasts, who have been working on the project for over a year.
The Biennale is an exhibition structure beyond itself, an event that that allows for very different subject matter. Its function, as defined by planners and curators, is to add intellectual capital, to think about the relationship between the past and present and to experiment with truths.

The Karachi Biennale will focus on connecting Art with the city and its people through the theme ‘Witness’. The chief curator of the Karachi Biennale Amin Gulgee has invited over a 100 national and international artistes to interpret the theme of the biennale, ‘WITNESS’ through a diversity of media that reflects the Contemporary Art of our times.
The exhibitions of these art works will be held throughout the city and available for the public without any entry fee. The Karachi Biennale will offer a rare opportunity to see museum quality art every two years. This way, Art will create a collective cultural experience for a large part of the City’s population and help them to see it as the cultural capital of a nation, invested with its creative energy.
The visitors programs of the Karachi biennale will include special activities for school children and youth, talks and artiste-led talks for general visitors will introduce them to art on display.
The First Karachi Biennale has begun its Public Outreach project ‘Reel on Hai’ and 5 reels transformed by artistes have been installed in Orangi at OPP, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Emergency Ward, JPMC and Customs House.
In the next 4 months, dozens of them will be installed from Safari Park to Malir, Karachi University to Mohammad Bin Qasim Park, and Safari Park to the Zoo among others. These reels created by dozens of artistes will beautify, as well as introduce Art to the citizens in their own Mohallas.
The First Karachi Biennale 2017 promises Karachi a memorable cultural experience every two years.
