KARACHI: – Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has welcomed the appointment of Prof. Saeed Quraishy, as the new Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), as directed by the Sindh High Court.
Dr. S.M.Qaisar Sajjad, Secretary General-PMA Centre addressing a press conference, stated that the PMA was struggling hard for the appointment of VC of DHUS, only on merit, for a long time and it was probably for the first time in the history of Sindh that the highest post of the prestigious institution had been filled with excellence.
He said that in accordance with the law, a vice chancellor cannot work after completion of his two terms in the office, but, the former VC Masood Hameed continued for the third term, illegally and in connivance of then Governor of Sindh. Even after his third term expired in September 2015, he was given another extension. This seat was never filled on merit in the past, due to political interference in the affairs of the University.
He further added that the previous Chief Minister of Sindh sent two summaries to the Governor Sindh for the appointment of VC, but he rejected the same. After the election of new young, energetic, enlightened and foreign qualified Chief Minister of Sindh, it was expected that he will follow the merit and law, but unfortunately, it did not happen.
Dr. Qaisar congratulated Prof. Saeed Quraishy and all the medical fraternity for this success. He hoped that the newly appointed VC would follow the norms of merit, transparency and accountability and would refrain from the corrupt practices and take the academic standards of medical education to a new height.
Dr. Mirza Ali Azhar- former secretary PMA said, “We have not struggled for Dr. Saeed Qurashy, but to promote merit culture in all institutions. PMA’s role is of a watchdog”.
He asked the new vice chancellor to initiate an inquiry against all the culprits involved in corrupt practices for the last 14 years.
The other PMA Karachi office-bearers who were present at this occasion included Dr. Qazi M. Wasiq-Treasurer, Dr. Shoukat Malik- President, Dr. Ahmed Bhemani-General Secretary, Dr. Sarwar Jamil Siddiqui, besides others.
