KARACHI: Veteran Journalist Ms. Zubeida Mustafa’s book, ‘My Dawn Years: Exploring Social Issues’, was launched at The Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA) on January 06th, 2018.
Dr Masooma Hasan- Chairperson PIIA, while introducing the journalist informed the audience the reason of choosing the PIIA for the launch of Ms. Zubeida’s book, as before Ms. Zubeida entered the world of journalism, she worked at the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA), Karachi, as a Research Officer. Later, she joined Dawn newspaper and built her career over there.
Mohammad Ali Siddiqui, Dawn’s Readers’ Editor, proudly said that he had worked with Ms. Zubeida together for four decades.
In her book, Zubeida writes that she has worked with four editors — the legendary Ahmad Ali Khan, Saleem Asmi, Tahir Mirza and Abbas Nasir. But, you will come across the name of Khan Sahib again and again,” said Mr. Siddiqui, adding that he was her mentor and mentors became like family members.
About Ms. Mustafa, he said she has a great common sense even during the time of crisis in work at the newspaper, she kept her mind open and cool.
Zohra Yusuf of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan on the title of the book said that ‘ My Dawn Years’ is fine but ‘ Exploring Social Issue’ seems an understatement as Ms. Zubeida had made an important contribution in making what Dawn is today.
She added that in the book Ms. Zubeida had publicized several aspects of Ahmed Ali Khan’s personality that no one knew before.
In the question-answer session, it was asked from Ms. Zubeida why she never made it to the position of editor in Dawn newspaper. She replied that the editor’s job was too administrative and it might take me away from my writing. But, she reminded of the issues she had written including health, education, environment, women’s rights and basic human rights which had to do with politics, after all.
At the concluding remarks, the author thanked the audience and all the people who had been involved in the publication of her book.
Zubeida Mustafa is a freelance journalist who writes a fortnightly column for Dawn, the paper with which she worked as an assistant editor from 1975 to 2008. Her interest has mainly been in the social sector. She has investigated in-depth issues such as education, health care, women’s empowerment, children’s rights and the lives of ordinary people.
A large number of people from different segments of life mostly associated with the profession of journalism attended the book launch ceremony. They also purchased the book’s copies and signed by the author to show their affection and love for Ms. Zubeida.
